The Story Behind Winston-Salem Handyman Pros

Winston-Salem grew out of two towns that sat a mile apart for most of the nineteenth century. Salem was laid out by Moravian settlers starting in 1766, a planned town of brick and half-timbered buildings around a square, and Winston grew up just to the north as the county seat in the 1850s, then boomed on tobacco, textiles and banking. The two joined in 1913, and the money from R.J. Reynolds, Hanes and Wachovia built much of what you see today: Victorian houses in the West End, the long streets of Craftsman bungalows and foursquares in Ardmore, the brick Georgian and Tudor homes of Buena Vista, and, after the Second World War, thousands of brick ranches spreading out toward Sherwood Forest, Mount Tabor and the county line. Newer neighborhoods in Clemmons, Lewisville and Kernersville and downtown lofts in old tobacco warehouses round it out. The climate is classic Piedmont: hot, humid summers with frequent thunderstorms, about 43 inches of rain spread through the year, mild winters broken up by ice and the occasional snow, and a thick coat of yellow pine pollen every April.

That mix of old houses, heavy clay and humid weather produces a constant stream of small repairs, and small repairs are exactly what's hard to get done. Larger contractors are busy with additions and kitchen remodels, and a sagging gate, a hairline crack across a plaster ceiling or a disposal that hums but won't turn just isn't worth their trip. So the list grows: the porch light that quit, the shower valve that drips all night, the gutters stuffed with oak leaves and pine needles, the fence post that has started leaning in the soft clay, the shelves for the garage that never got hung.

That's the work we're here for. We're a local Winston-Salem outfit, general liability insured, and we'd rather earn your next call than stretch this one. We price clearly before we start, plan one organized visit around your whole list, and build for this region: managing water, using materials that hold up in the humidity, and treating old plaster, heart pine floors and original trim with care. Wiring and plumbing connections are made by our licensed electricians and plumbers, so a new light fixture, a ceiling fan on a fresh box or a replacement toilet gets finished on the same visit as the drywall patch and the sticking door. One call covers it, and that's how a small local crew earns a place in your phone.
